Turning Fear Into Excitement

Turning Fear Into Excitement

Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone.

From my perspective there are two kinds of fear. We experience the first kind of fear when someone pulls out in front of us on the highway and we jam on the brakes because we perceive that our lives are in danger. This kind of fear kicks in a fight or flight adrenaline rush.

(Read LoraLynn’s success story to see how these fearful situations get stuck in our physiology and causes us abnormal, long term reactions even when there is no immediate danger.)

The second kind of fear and the one we are going to address in this newsletter, occurs when we are afraid to move out of our comfort zone and do something new.

How many people do you know who complain about their life experiences, but never do anything about them? How many people do you know who stay at jobs they hate because they are afraid to do something different?

The problem most people have is that they don’t explore what they are really afraid of. As soon as they experience anything uncomfortable, they stop thinking about it or doing anything about their situation. We all have a comfort zone around ourselves that
is familiar even if it doesn't match what we really want.

We were all afraid to tackle our first two wheel bike. We were all afraid to get behind the wheel of a car. But think back to the exhilaration and satisfaction of conquering your fears and mastering those two modes of transportation. Sure there was a chance that
we could have run into something and gotten hurt, but the reward, the payoff was worth the risk.

The Bigger the Risk the Bigger the Reward.

Face Your Fear and Do It Anyway.

We have all heard those phrases, but take some time to apply them to your life. Think of something that you have been wanting to do, but fear has been stopping you. If your life isn’t in danger, what are you afraid of? What is the worse thing that can happen if you move forward? How big is the pay off if you succeed?

Moving out of our comfort zones is where life begins. It means that we are growing, expanding and evolving into someone bigger and better. We are extending the borders of our comfort zone. It is fun to tackle and accomplish something that we didn’t think was possible.

Notice where the line is between fear of doing something new and the excitement of doing something new.

Action Challenge

Pick one goal you have for yourself, big or small, that you have been afraid to take any action toward accomplishing.

Ask yourself what you are afraid of and make a list.

Look at your list of fears and decide if they are life threatening. Do your fears have any validation?

What would happen if your worst fears came true? Would your life be over or could you go on no matter what the outcome?

If you did move forward and things weren’t working out, could you give yourself permission to stop or change direction or are you afraid to commit because you think you would have to stick with it to the bitter end?

Make a list of the benefits, the rewards and the payoff for stepping out of your comfort zone. Are they enough to turn your fear into excitement?

How can you expand the boundaries of your comfort zone today?
